A knock down piece of furniture means that it was specially designed to disassemble and lay flat making ease of trasportation or moving an items room to room an easier task (think Ikea). However, these pieces were created using old world peg systems such as were used for post and beam buildings and require no tools. According to Finewoodworking.com, “The post-and-beam structure makes a cabinet that is strong and handsome and perfectly accommodates wood movement. If the major joints are pegged instead of glued, the cabinet can also be knocked down for transport or repair.” This mortise and tenon construction- with both wood joint pins and threaded iron pins—creates a versitile piece that could literally move from the bedroom to the bath to the living room, etc. while the beautiful design would enhance any space.
